US Coast Guard Pursues Sanctioned Oil Tanker in Caribbean Sea (2026)

A tense standoff is unfolding in the Caribbean Sea, with the US Coast Guard hot on the trail of yet another sanctioned oil tanker linked to Venezuela's government. This latest pursuit comes amidst a series of escalating actions by the Trump administration, targeting vessels it believes are involved in illegal sanctions evasion.

But here's where it gets controversial...

On Sunday, a US official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the Coast Guard was in pursuit of a "sanctioned dark fleet vessel" flying under a false flag. This vessel is allegedly part of Venezuela's "illegal sanctions evasion" tactics. The official further stated that the vessel was under a judicial seizure order, adding a layer of complexity to the situation.

The Pentagon and Department of Homeland Security, responsible for the Coast Guard, deferred all questions to the White House, which remained silent on the operation.

This pursuit follows a predawn seizure on Saturday of a Panama-flagged vessel named Centuries. The White House described this vessel as a "falsely flagged" member of Venezuela's "shadow fleet", used to traffic stolen oil.

And this is the part most people miss...

The Coast Guard, with Navy assistance, had already seized a sanctioned tanker called Skipper on December 10. This tanker, like the one currently being pursued, is part of Venezuela's "shadow fleet" of tankers that the US claims operates outside the law to move sanctioned cargo.

President Donald Trump, after the first seizure, announced a "blockade" of Venezuela. This announcement came amidst a ratcheting up of rhetoric against Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

Trump has demanded that Venezuela return assets seized from US oil companies years ago, justifying his blockade against oil tankers traveling to or from the country. He cited lost US investments and drug trafficking accusations as motivations for these actions.

US oil companies once dominated Venezuela's petroleum industry until the country's leaders nationalized the sector. In 2014, an international arbitration panel ordered Venezuela's socialist government to pay $1.6 billion to ExxonMobil for insufficient compensation.

Maduro, in a Telegram message, accused the US of "psychological terrorism" and "corsairs attacking oil tankers." He vowed to "accelerate the pace of our deep revolution!"

Sen. Rand Paul, a critic of Trump's Venezuela policy, called the tanker seizures a "provocation and a prelude to war." He questioned the role of American soldiers as "policemen of the world."

The targeting of tankers coincides with Trump's order to the Defense Department to attack vessels in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific Ocean allegedly smuggling fentanyl and other drugs. At least 104 people have been killed in these strikes since September.

Trump has repeatedly stated that Maduro's days are numbered. White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles said Trump wants to "keep on blowing boats up until Maduro cries uncle."

Sen. Tim Kaine criticized Trump's use of military force, saying it contradicts his pledge to keep the US out of unnecessary wars. Democrats are urging Trump to seek congressional authorization for these actions.

Kaine argued for the use of sanctions and other tools to punish Maduro, but stressed, "We should not be waging war against Venezuela without a vote of Congress."

This ongoing situation raises complex questions about international relations, the role of the US in global affairs, and the limits of military action. What do you think? Should the US be taking these actions against Venezuela? Share your thoughts in the comments!
