In a surprising turn of events, the acclaimed Duffer Brothers have officially announced that their long-anticipated adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, The Talisman, for Netflix has been scrapped. This news comes at a time when King is actively working on the third installment of the series, but the project that was initially revealed in 2021 will not be moving forward.
During an interview with CBR, Ross Duffer shared the disappointing update: "Unfortunately, Talisman is no longer at Netflix, so we’re not involved anymore." He went on to reflect on his early experiences in the industry, recalling, "Back when I was interning at Kennedy Marshall during my college years, I remember coming across a movie script for Talisman. It feels like it has been in development forever, and I’m truly sorry that we weren’t able to break that long-standing curse of delays."
Originally published in 1984 and co-authored by Stephen King and Peter Straub, The Talisman is a fantasy novel that uniquely remains unadapted for both film and television. Interestingly, Steven Spielberg has held the rights to this captivating story since the 1980s, yet various attempts at creating adaptations have come and gone over the years without resulting in a completed project.
The Duffer Brothers had planned to collaborate with Spielberg himself, with Netflix set to produce alongside Amblin Entertainment. However, recent developments have led them to establish a new deal with Paramount, signaling a shift away from Netflix as they prepare to conclude their agreement with the streaming giant by April 2026.
The narrative of The Talisman follows twelve-year-old Jack Sawyer, who embarks on an extraordinary adventure—a daunting quest for the mystical Talisman, which holds the key to saving his ailing mother. To achieve his mission, Jack must navigate not only across the vast expanse of the United States but also through the enchanting yet perilous parallel dimension known as the Territories.
In this alternate realm, Jack encounters a world where the air is so pure that one can detect the scent of a radish being unearthed from a mile away, contrasting sharply with the ever-present dangers of a place where life and death are constantly at odds in the battle between good and evil. During his journey, Jack discovers ‘Twinners’—mirror images of those he knows in his original world—most notably Queen Laura, a Twinner of his endangered mother. As he transitions between these two worlds, making his way toward the life-saving Talisman, Jack faces a series of intense challenges at every turn.
Even though the Duffer Brothers' adaptation of The Talisman is now officially off the table at Netflix, fans can still look forward to the highly anticipated finale of Stranger Things, set to air on New Year’s Eve, along with the upcoming supernatural series The Boroughs, which is scheduled for release next year.
