A groundbreaking study has revealed the potential of an innovative mouthwash to revolutionize the treatment of hyposalivation in head and neck cancer patients. This mouthwash, developed with a protein extracted from sugarcane and modified in a laboratory, forms a protective shield for teeth, safeguarding them from the harmful acids present in various beverages and stomach acids. Dr. Silva further highlighted the unique ability of CANECPI-5 to bind directly to tooth enamel, enhancing its resistance to acidic attacks from bacteria. The data published in the Journal of Dentistry revealed that the protein's effectiveness is maximized when combined with fluoride and xylitol, significantly reducing bacterial activity and tooth demineralization.

This discovery is particularly significant for head and neck cancer patients, who often lack access to specific products to combat the aggressive cavities that develop post-radiation therapy. "Artificial saliva not only improves the dry mouth sensation and soothes sores but also combats bacteria. In some cases, its use is temporary, while in others, it becomes a permanent solution due to the loss of saliva production," explained Dr. Buzalaf.

The researchers have already filed a patent for the CANECPI-5 protein and are now seeking partnerships with interested companies to scale up production of the artificial saliva. Dr. Buzalaf mentioned testing the solution in various forms, including mouthwash, gel, and orodispersible film, with promising results across all formats.

The discovery of CANECPI-5 is attributed to the work of Dr. Flávio Henrique Silva, a professor at the Federal University of São Carlos, who was involved in developing the protein as part of the Sugarcane Genome Project. The researchers believe that the protein's ability to protect tooth enamel and regulate the oral microbiota makes it a highly promising molecule for dentistry research.

Moving forward, the research team plans to delve deeper into understanding how CANECPI-5 interacts with other substances. Dr. Buzalaf suggested exploring the fusion of CANECPI-5 with a peptide derived from statherin, a protein found in saliva, to enhance its effectiveness against stomach acids. Additionally, they aim to investigate its potential in combating periodontal disease.

"We're also considering associating CANECPI-5 with vitamin E, as this vitamin could act as a carrier, facilitating the protein's contact with the tooth and potentially making it easier for patients to apply the product at home," she concluded.

This innovative research opens up new avenues for treating the side effects of head and neck cancer treatment, offering a glimmer of hope and improved quality of life for patients.
