The Penguins organization announced that Brunicke, a 19-year-old rising star, will join the Kamloops Blazers of the Western Hockey League (WHL). This assignment comes after Brunicke's impressive start to the 2025-26 season, where he showcased his talent in nine games for Pittsburgh, scoring a goal and averaging over 15 minutes of ice time per game. He also spent time with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in the AHL, contributing four assists in five games.
But here's where his story gets even more intriguing: Brunicke, a Johannesburg native, is only the second South African to ever play in the NHL. He made his debut on October 7, following in the footsteps of goaltender Olie Kolzig. This milestone adds an international flavor to his promising career.
And his success isn't limited to the NHL. Brunicke recently showcased his skills on the international stage at the 2026 World Junior Championship, helping Team Canada secure a bronze medal. He also represented his home country at the 2024 World Under-18 Championship, returning home with a gold medal.
Before turning professional, Brunicke spent four seasons with the Kamloops Blazers, the same team he's now returning to. During his time in the WHL, he demonstrated his defensive prowess, accumulating 19 goals, 40 assists, and 59 points in 151 regular-season games.
