The automotive industry is abuzz with surprising sales figures, revealing a dynamic market landscape. GM's sales in the U.S. accelerated by 5.5% in 2025, a remarkable feat considering the overall industry's modest 2% growth projection. But here's the twist: this success comes despite a 6.9% sales dip in the fourth quarter.
GM's sales growth is attributed to the rising popularity of electric vehicles (EVs) and the robust demand for large SUVs and entry-level cars like the Buick Envista. This strategy has solidified GM's position as the top vehicle seller in the U.S., a title it has held for decades, except for a brief period in 2021 when Toyota took the lead amidst supply chain challenges.
Other automakers are also making waves. Toyota's sales soared by 8%, while Hyundai and Kia celebrated three consecutive years of record sales, increasing by 8.4% and 7%, respectively. Honda Motor also joined the party with a 0.5% sales bump.
But the real surprise comes from Stellantis, Chrysler's parent company, which is down 3.3% overall. Its Jeep brand, however, defied the odds with a less than 1% growth in 2024, marking its first U.S. sales increase since 2018. Stellantis' U.S. retail sales head, Jeff Kommor, attributes this to their strategic turnaround plan and diversified powertrain lineup.
GM's North America President, Duncan Aldred, expressed confidence in their brands' appeal across price points and their momentum for the future. The company also celebrated expanding its U.S. market share to 17% and becoming the second-largest seller of EVs in the country, right after Tesla.
