A shocking incident at a Perth restaurant has sparked a conversation about food safety and the responsibilities of hospitality businesses. Two young girls, Hannah and Olivia Lemin, aged 12 and 11, unknowingly consumed insect repellent, mistaking it for cranberry juice. This horrifying experience has led to a $40,000 fine for the former owner of Miky's Italian Fusion, Michele Angiuli, and a deeper look into the importance of food safety protocols.
The girls, along with their parents, Marcus and Michele, were dining at the restaurant in Crawley when they ordered what they thought was a harmless glass of cranberry juice. However, the bartender, employed by the restaurant, served them a dangerous concoction of citronella torch and lamp oil solution, which resembled the pink color of cranberry juice.
But here's where it gets controversial... The girls, trusting the restaurant's service, took a sip, only to realize something was terribly wrong. They immediately spat it out, describing the taste as "poisoned." Their parents, in a panic, demanded answers and ran to the front counter, where they encountered a staff member who initially denied any wrongdoing, claiming it was "just old cranberry juice."
The family's quick thinking and action saved the day. They rushed to the hospital, where the girls and their mother, Ms. Lemin, were treated for symptoms including burning stomachs, tingling fingers, and headaches. Thankfully, they were observed and discharged after several hours.
And this is the part most people miss... The incident highlights the potential dangers of lax food safety practices. Magistrate Donna Webb pointed out that the restaurant seemed to be poorly managed, with staff lacking proper food safety certifications. Angiuli was found guilty of selling unsafe food and failing to exercise due diligence, along with other related charges.
Mr. Lemin, speaking after the court hearing, emphasized the need for stricter regulations and accountability in the hospitality industry. He hopes the fine will send a message and encourage business owners to take their responsibilities more seriously.
What do you think? Is this fine enough to deter similar incidents in the future? Or should there be stricter penalties to ensure the safety of consumers? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
