On January 22nd, the C.W. Wiebe Medical Centre and Pembina Valley Pride are joining forces to host an inclusive event, aiming to raise awareness and break down barriers to cervical cancer screening. Executive Director Karen Denise Cyr emphasizes the importance of this initiative, creating a relaxed environment for a crucial health check.
An Inclusive Pop-Up Clinic for Cervical Health
The Pop-UpPapTest Clinic, running from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., is a special initiative honoring Cervical Health Awareness Month. Cyr explains, "This event is all about reminding us to take care of our health, especially our cervical health." The clinic's fantastic team of physicians at C.W. Wiebe is dedicated to ensuring the health and well-being of the entire community, and this event promises a fun, low-key atmosphere where attendees can get their cervical health checked while enjoying some light refreshments.
Who Should Consider a Pap Test?
Dr. Rachel Noble, also from the C.W. Wiebe Clinic, clarifies that anyone with a cervix between the ages of 21 and 69 should consider getting a Pap test. This simple procedure collects cells from the cervix to detect any signs of cancer. While it may not be the most enjoyable experience, C.W. Wiebe aims to make it as comfortable as possible, and the peace of mind it offers is invaluable.
"Taking care of your cervical health allows you to live the rest of your life knowing you've screened for cancer," Cyr adds. "It's a sad reality that something so treatable when caught early could hold anyone back from living a full life."
Breaking Down Barriers: An Event for All
Dr. Noble highlights how fear, especially during the pandemic, can prevent people from accessing healthcare. "We're partnering with Pembina Valley Pride to show that love conquers fear. We want everyone to feel welcome." She acknowledges that various factors, such as societal acceptance, financial issues, or past experiences of abuse, can deter people from seeking healthcare. "That's why we're holding this event in the evening, making it more convenient for everyone."
Dr. Noble assures that a health card is not necessary for a Pap test, making the screening accessible to all.
A Preventable Cancer: The Power of Early Detection
The OB-GYN specialist emphasizes that cervical cancer is highly preventable, with almost all cases caught at the precancerous stage. "The Pap test is a powerful tool that allows us to detect and treat precancerous cells before they progress." In Manitoba, about 1 in 50 people are diagnosed with cervical cancer each year, but with early detection, the outcome can be significantly improved.
The Test: A Pelvic Exam with Consent and Comfort
Dr. Noble describes the test as a pelvic exam, administered by female providers who prioritize consent throughout. "After the speculum part, we can visualize the cervix." She also mentions exciting research projects through Cancer Care Manitoba exploring the possibility of self-screening, offering an alternative for those who may find the process challenging.
Support and Comfort: A Priority at the Pop-Up Event
Cyr understands that the comfort level with a Pap test varies, and the pop-up event's atmosphere is designed to be as approachable as possible. "Our thoughts and feelings leading up to the test impact our perception. By creating a calm and safe space, we can make the experience easier." She reminds us that the end goal, being cancer-free, is worth the effort.
